Angles for Oracle-Generator for Microsoft Power BI

Overview

This chapter introduces you to the Angles Generator and provides information about the concepts associated with it. The Angles Generator works with the Angles Generator Service and accesses the NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, or RapidDecision metadata, thereby enabling users to build reports and answers in the Microsoft Power BI Desktop, and then securely share reports to others with the Microsoft Power BI Service.

Supporting Concepts

The supporting concepts associated with the Angles Generator. are defined in the following sections.

Angles for Oracle-Generator for Microsoft Power BI

The Angles Generator is installed on end user workstations and provides the following benefits to the Microsoft Power BI Desktop users and administrators:

  • Enables the creation of interactive report templates that are based on NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, or RapidDecision data sources.
  • Supports a presentation layer that provides a business friendly view of the NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, or RapidDecision metadata including the descriptions for the various metadata objects.
  • Supports data filters for the NoetixViews columns and, Noetix Analytics and RapidDecision fields.
  • Displays parameters with associated List of Values (LoVs) for the NoetixViews columns.
  • Supports generation of Noetix answers for NoetixViews metadata.
  • Supports user authentication.
  • Supports authorization, including the role-level and row-level security for users of NoetixViews, and including the row-level security for users of RapidDecision.
  • Supports Import and DirectQuery data connectivity modes of Microsoft Power BI.

Data Connectivity Modes

Angles Generator supports the following data connectivity modes that correspond to Microsoft Power BI:

  • DirectQuery
  • Import

For more information about the data connectivity modes, see Microsoft Power BI documentation.

DirectQuery

The DirectQuery data connectivity mode of Microsoft Power BI does not import or copy data into Microsoft Power BI Desktop. The Microsoft Power BI Desktop directly queries the underlying data source for real-time data.

You can use DirectQuery data connectivity mode for NoetixViews and RapidDecision data source to connect to the underlying databases. Interactive report templates generated in this mode support row-level security for NoetixViews and RapidDecision metadata in Microsoft Power BI Desktop, as well as when reports are published on Microsoft Power BI Service.

To generate a report for DirectQuery data connectivity mode, in the Angles Generator., select the DirectQuery checkbox while generating the report.

Import

The Import data connectivity mode of Microsoft Power BI imports the selected views and columns into Microsoft Power BI Desktop. Therefore, when you create any visualization for your report, Microsoft Power BI Desktop uses the imported data. To get the underlying data changes, since the initial import or the most recent refresh, you must refresh to import the full dataset again.

You can use Import data connectivity mode for NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, and RapidDecision data sources, and the Noetix ODBC for Oracle Driver is used for connecting to the underlying databases. However, this mode supports row-level security for NoetixViews metadata only in Microsoft Power BI Desktop.

To generate a report for Import data connectivity mode, in the Angles Generator., clear the DirectQuery checkbox while generating the report.

Usage Guidelines

This section explains when to use DirectQuery data connectivity mode or Import data connectivity mode for generating your report.

DirectQuery mode

Import mode

When you need real-time data

When faster report performance is the main criteria over real-time data

When report is created in Microsoft Power BI Desktop, and shared in Microsoft Power BI Service across many users

When reports are used in Microsoft Power BI Desktop, and sharing or distributing of the reports is not required

When you generate reports using the DirectQuery data connectivity mode, for optimal performance of the reports use the filters provided in the business metadata essay of the view.

Angles Generator Service

The Angles Generator Service is a component that makes the metadata and configuration information for NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, and RapidDecision available to instances of the Angles Generator.. The information provided to the Angles Generator. enables Microsoft Power BI Desktop users to develop reports.

Noetix ODBC for Oracle Driver

The Noetix ODBC for Oracle driver provides connectivity to NoetixViews data sources. The driver supports the data access privileges (row-level security) and view-level authorization that are set up for users in NoetixViews, thereby ensuring that Microsoft Power BI Desktop users can see only the information that they are authorized to access. The driver also provides Active Directory-based authentication for the Microsoft Power BI Desktop, thereby eliminating the need to maintain database accounts for the users.

Noetix ODBC for Oracle Driver is applicable only for Import data connectivity mode.

Support for NoetixViews Metadata

The following NoetixViews metadata objects are supported in the Angles Generator.:

  • Global form of the Noetix views.
  • Key flexfield views associated with the global views.
  • Noetix answers. For information about using NoetixAnswers, see the chapter “Leveraging NoetixAnswers” in the Noetix Views User Guide.
  • Parameters with associated LoVs for the NoetixViews columns.
  • Row-level security is supported in Microsoft Power BI Desktop and Microsoft Power BI Service.

However, the structure-specific key flexfield and parent-child views are not supported in the Angles Generator..

Support for Noetix Analytics Metadata

The following Noetix Analytics metadata objects are supported in Angles Generator.:

  • NOETIXODS and NOETIXDM relationship sets. For information about the metadata, see the Noetix Analytics Report Developer/User Guide.
  • Data modeling of the metadata objects.

Support for RapidDecision Metadata

The following RapidDecision metadata objects are supported in Angles Generator.:

  • Rapid Decision relationship sets.
  • Data modelling of the metadata objects.
  • Row-level security is supported in Microsoft Power BI Desktop and Microsoft Power BI Service
