Working with Angles for Oracle-Generator for Microsoft Power BI

Overview

This chapter provides information about how to use the Angles for Oracle Generator.

Configure Noetix Connections

What Is a Noetix Connection?

A Noetix connection stores the connection information for a NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, or RapidDecision data source and provides access to the NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, or RapidDecision metadata. The Angles for Oracle Generator uses the Noetix connection to access and load the NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, or RapidDecision metadata. For information about setting up data sources, see the chapter “Setting Up Data Sources using Angles for Oracle Generator Service” in the Angles for Oracle Generator for Microsoft Power BI Administrator Guide.

Create a Noetix Connection

The following step-action table contains the procedure for creating a Noetix connection.

Step

Action

1.

Select Start > All Programs > Angles for Oracle Generator for Microsoft Power BI > Angles for Oracle Generator for Microsoft Power BI. The Angles for Oracle Generator for Microsoft Power BI window appears.

2.

In the Create Power BI Template area, select Configure Noetix Connections. The Angles for Oracle Generator for Microsoft Power BI dialog box appears.

3.

Select New. The options to configure your Noetix connection appear.

4.

In the Name box, type a unique name for the Noetix connection that you want to create for the NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, or RapidDecision data source.

5.

In the Server box, accept the default value or type the URL of the computer on which the Angles for Oracle Generator Service is installed.

The URL should be provided in the net.tcp://[computer_name/IP_address:port] format.

6.

In the Source list box, select a NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, or RapidDecision data source.

Contact the administrator if the list is empty or the required data source is not available in the list.

7.

Select OK. The Noetix connection appears on the Angles for Oracle Generator for Microsoft Power BI window in the Create Power BI Template area.

Create Interactive Report Templates

Introduction

This section contains information about creating interactive report templates based on the NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, and RapidDecision metadata.

About Interactive Report Templates

After the Noetix connection is created, you can load the metadata and create interactive report templates for the required metadata objects. The interactive report template file will be created and saved with a .pbit extension in the following formats:

  • Metadata objects: <User_Defined_Name>.pbit
  • Answer: <Question (ViewName)>.pbit

Create an Interactive Report Template

The following step-action table contains the procedure for creating an interactive report template.

Step

Action

1.

Select Start > All Programs > Angles for Oracle Generator for Microsoft Power BI > Angles for Oracle Generator for Microsoft Power BI. The Angles for Oracle Generator for Microsoft Power BI window appears.

2.

In the Create Power BI Template area, select the Noetix connection for NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, or RapidDecision. The corresponding metadata loads, and the main window of the Angles for Oracle Generator appears.

3.

In the left pane, expand the tree, and select the required metadata objects. The selected objects pertaining to the NoetixViews, Noetix Analytics, or RapidDecision field definition folders are displayed in the right pane. Also, the tree in the left pane is updated automatically to display only the relevant objects. To see all the metadata objects in the left pane, clear the selection.

If you create an interactive report template based on multiple Noetix Analytics metadata objects, in Microsoft Power BI Desktop, you can view and manage the relationships between the objects in the Model view.

4.

Optionally, to see the description of a metadata object, move the pointer over the object.

5.

Select DirectQuery to:

  • Use DirectQuery data connectivity mode for interactive report template generation in the Angles for Oracle Generator.
  • Allow row-level security for interactive report template in Microsoft Power BI Desktop and Microsoft Power BI Service

This option is only available for RapidDecision and NoetixViews data source. For RapidDecision data source, the Include Parameters and Generate Answers options are not available. For NoetixViews data source, the Include Parameters and Generate Answers options are not available when you select DirectQuery. If you create an interactive report template without selecting this option, the row-level security is available only when you use the report in Microsoft Power BI Desktop.

6.

To specify filters, select Edit Filters. The Data Filters window appears.

Alternatively, on the File menu, select Edit Filters. The Data Filters window appears.

For a Noetix Analytics data warehouse that is hosted on a Microsoft SQL Server database, if Windows-based authentication is not configured for the data source, when you specify filters, you will be prompted to provide the NOETIXRPT password.

7.

Perform the following steps:

  1. In the Available fields list, select the required fields, and select . The selected fields appear in the right pane. The operator and values for a filter are available for selection only after the list is populated with values.
  2. To remove a filter, select for the filter.

  3. In the Filters pane, choose the appropriate operator and value for the filters.
  4. Optionally, type a search string, and refresh the list. The values that begin with the letters in the search string appears.
  5. Select OK. The information about the applied filters for the selected metadata objects appears in the right pane.

8.

Perform one of the following:

  • If you have selected a single Noetix view, perform the following:
    1. To include all possible parameters in the interactive report template, select Include Parameters.
    2. To include specific parameters in the interactive report template, select the Edit link. The Parameter configuration window appears.
    3. Clear the parameters that are not required, and then select OK.
  • If you have selected multiple Noetix views, the interactive report template is generated with all possible parameters for the selected views, by default. However, the Include Parameters check box is not available for selection. To include specific parameters in the report template, perform the following:
    1. Select the Edit link. The Parameter configuration window appears.
    2. Clear the parameters that are not required, and then select OK.

The Include Parameters and Edit options are applicable only to the NoetixViews metadata objects, and when the DirectQuery option is not selected.

9.

Select Generate Answers. The interactive report template is generated for each answer of the selected Noetix view.

This Generate Answers option is available only when a single Noetix view is selected, and if the selected Noetix view contains answers. The answer icon on the ERD indicates that answers are available for the selected Noetix view. Also, this option is available only when the DirectQuery option is not selected.

10.

Select Save. Select the folder where you want to save, provide a name to your interactive report template, and then select OK. A message appears stating that the report templates are successfully created and prompting you to view the report template.

11.

Select Yes to view the interactive report template location.

12.

Open the interactive report template in Microsoft Power BI Desktop.

13.

If you had selected Import data connectivity mode, do the following:

  1. Configure the parameters (if any), and run the report.
  2. Select Apply Changes, and provide the NoetixViews (NOETIX_SYS) schema credentials, if required, to view the report.

14.

If you had selected DirectQuery data connectivity mode, do the following:

  1. On the Potential security risk dialog box, select OK.
  2. On the Native Database Query dialog box, select Run.
  3. Optionally, to view the row-level security of the report for the user logged in to Microsoft Power BI Desktop, go to Modeling > View As, and select SecurityRole.

15.

Save the report as a template (.pbit) or report (.pbix).

16.

Publish and share the report (.pbix).
